I built this Bull Dolphin in collaboration with my business cohort, Devin. He had a calendar on the wall with a long strange fish. We figured out that it would be cool to make a fish in three parts that could be hung on the wall, yet be a functional piece. Just prior to that, Devin had won first place in a fishing tournament by landing a 54 pound Bull Dolphin. The design idea was born! This piece took several months to finalize. It was built during an all day studio session. I then built and carved all the details. I let the clay dry slowly over a couple months; and I made test tiles of the glazes. Finally, I glazed and fired all three pieces together. The results, though exhilarating, had a major flaw--the head had cracked--the dorsal fin portion had broken off. Determined, I built another head; let it dry slowly over a couple months; and finally glazed and fired it. Devin has decided to hang it on his office wall, and once it is hung, I know it will motivate me to attempt "our" ambitious design idea once more. Hmmm, I wonder, which fish to choose next?
